Huangshan, located southeast of Shanghai is home to the famous Yellow Mountains. If you have never googled or at least pinterest searched the Yellow Mountains you probably should take a break from reading this and go do it right now because what you will find is pretty amazing. Growing up in the Rocky Mountains I assumed I had already seen the most amazing mountain scenes that I would ever see. And let's be real, the Rockies are amazing, but... they were nothing compared to what we saw in Huangshan!
Part of what makes the Yellow Mountains so attractive to hikers and mountain climbers is the entire experience. Getting to the mountain base and then getting to the top will take you all day, which is why most travelers will stay in Huangshan the night before and begin their trek to the top of the mountain around 4am. That is what we did, and Huanghsan ended up being one of our favorite cities in China. It's famous Old street is a blast to walk through and I felt that the vendors there were much less aggressive than in other places in China. Our hostel made the most amazing pizza I ate while in China and it was such a treat after hiking all day long. The city also has multiple hot springs which are a must! We took a bus from our hostel to the base of the mountain where we caught the cable car to the top. This saved us on time because we planned to spend only one day on the mountain. We then hiked strait up and down stairs for twelve miles to see the majority of the iconic sights on the mountain. TWELVE MILES PEOPLE. OF STAIRS. My legs were jello, but other than that it was one of the best days of my life. Garret and I did the majority of the hike by ourselves and the memories we made that day will be cherished forever! I would recommend getting a map of the mountain and staying for a full day so that you give the mist time to clear in the afternoon. Don't be discouraged if you have poor visibility when you first get there, there's a good chance it will clear up if you give it time! Bring plenty of food with you, because the food will be so overpriced once you enter the park and bring lots of water!
